Atrial Septal Defects
Sometimes, at birth, the wall separating the upper chambers of the heart does not completely close. The resulting hole lets blood flow from the left side of the heart to the right. Symptoms of an ASD include shortness of breath, fatigue, or irregular heart beats. Surgery involves closing the hole or patching with synthetic material or tissue from around the heart, called pericardium.
